Progress is a slow thing...

January 10th, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Well, for two solid weeks I have kept an accurate checkbook register. Daily, I pop online to check my balance and check it against my checkbook register. It's working out very well. What it is truly showing me, however, is how much money I/we waste on stupid little crap like a run to Walgreens for Vaseline and Chloraseptic tablets for my strep throat. Or how about $13.07 for sleep diapers (we need to begin going to bed without those...goals goals goals). And then there's the "left the house without a lunch because I didn't think I'd eat one I'm so sick and throat hurts so bad" but then I end up going to Subway for lunch because I'm famished and OH they serve SOUP too! Sigh. I'm a work in progress. At least I know exactly how much money I have in my account and how much I'm working with in the next week. It feels much better being aware rather than being completely oblivious and hoping my account doesn't hit zero before the following Friday.

You are making great progress! Just being aware of how much money you have and how much you're spending is great and puts you on the road to financial success.

I agree with Rduell. I check my account online everyday to see what has come through. One time, they took a $75 check and put it through as $750. Holy crap. I went right to the bank to clear that up, so it is good to keep track of your money and not let someone else do it.

Yeah, I can certainly relate to things dragging at a snail's pace. I try to remind myself that financial freedom is like climbing a mountain. It's hard to climb up, easy to slide down, but once your up, the view can be breath-taking.

I agree with the above posters about keeping track of your spending helps keep you on track. It made me realize that I needed to keep certain items on hand, i.e. Sudafed, robbistussin, bandaids, etc. The easiest way is to buy them when they are on sale and you have a coupon. Once I started tracking, like you, I discovered when I was most vulnerable to spend more. You are doing great. The discoveries are eye opening.

If you are a working mom, how about a few cans of Campbells or microwave meals in the desk drawer for these 'gaaaaaa, I need to eat something NOW moments?'

Or a bag of nuts? They are very good for you, and a couple handfuls feels almost like a meal if you eat them slowly, so your stomach registers when it feels full. Get unsalted or low salt though, or you'll crave something sweet afterward!
