Credit Cards for Everything

February 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Why is it that people believe "well, if you can't afford it, just put it on credit!" My mother recently asked me to join her for a trip to Florida (she recently went through cancer treatments and needs all the uplift she can get). I told her that would be great, however, I currently don't have the funding to pay for a ticket. I know as she looked at me quizzically she was thinking, "just put it on credit."

First of all, I am trying not to pay for things on credit cards. I am trying to learn how to budget and use the cash I have to pay for things. Second, I only have two credit cards that have very small credit limits. I am trying to build back my credit score (although due to Christmas and DS's 4th birthday, they are rather overspent, but will be paid off with tax return and money earned from coaching).

I understand that some people have a bigger base and they use their credit cards and pay them off in full every month. I am pretty sure, though, that this is not the case for people such as my siblings who must do things of this nature on a consistent basis. It's simply a philosophical difference, but it still floors me everytime. My family's way of thinking is what has gotten me into the trouble I'm in in the first place.

People have a different mindset when it comes to credit cards. People who would never overdraw their checking account continually overspend on credit cards. Your spending decision should be separate from your payment option (cash, credit card, debit, etc.).

You should look at your budget and add some line items, like birthday presents, parties, and Christmas. This way you can start saving a little money now and it should keep you from over charging. I also have a house and car maintenance fund. These funds keep me from dipping into my emergency fund and adding new debt. Just some thoughts.

My mom and daughter had cancer and both of them went through years of treatments. There where times when we were able to take some vacations together with my mom. She is now in heaven and all I can say is that I am glad I did everything I could and spent all the time I could with my mom before she passed. Those vacations hold some of me and my kids best memories ever and we talk about them all the time and to look at pictures from those vacations is so comforting. I am not suggesting you use your credit cards, but maybe you and your mom can figure out another more affordable vacation together and give you a couple months to save towards that time. It will be worth it.

It is great that you are learning to budget and trying to pay cash for everything! It is harder to do when those closest to you don't share your views, but hang in there.

Coming up with free or less expensive alternatives is IMHO the most rewarding part of the world of frugality. Isn't is possible to have meaningful fun with your mom without spending a lot of money? For example, what if you and your mom had a "girls at-home spa day" (give each other pedicures, etc), or spent a day organizing family photos and sharing memories, or popped popcorn and watched chick flicks together? You can create special memories without breaking the bank.

Keep up with your good thoughts and budgeting, stay within your means. Please be careful with those cards. I was a single parent with three kids, making good money and buying everything and everything my kids wanted. I also put two of them through college and some of that was credit card debt ... then the housing market crashed and with that my income, now I'm swimming in credit card debt and can't make my minimum payments. If you see yourself in trouble, start finding a way to get out now before you have used all your resources and are backed in a corner.

I am one of those people who pays with a credit card and then pays it off in full every month. I do it for the convenience and the cashback rewards. But it takes discipline -- maybe even more discipline than spending cash because you have to know where to draw the line.

    Carolina,
I certainly hope to get to the place where you are at one day! I have a lot of work to do in getting myself together--you're sure correct about discipline!

    Campfrugal,
Rest assure that I have let my mother know I don't have the cash now, but will pay her back later. We are certainly going! I hope your daughter has had a full recovery and is well.

    Merch,
Thanks for the advice. I hope to work towards having separate funds in the future. Everyday is a struggle for me to keep to a more disciplined financial plan. I work on making everything habitual. Smile

Scfr...thank you for your kind words. BTW, I could've rolled all of these responses into one, couldn't I? Laughing...always learning.

I'm like Carolina Bound. We charge everything we possibly can to our reward cards and pay the bills in full each month. Last year, our rewards totaled nearly $1,000. Credit cards are a great convenience and help us save lots of money, but you do need to be able to control and keep track of your spending. Until you can do that, it is best to avoid them.

My mother is one with a beautiful credit rating. She's never bounced a check and hasn't been late on a payment of any kind in probably 30 years. Her house is paid for. But she's well over her head to the CC companies and doesn't understand why I won't do the same. She tells me regularly that she and my stepfather want to get out of debt but they just can't seem to do it. Gosh, I wonder why!
