on the move

June 25th, 2008 at 11:49 am

I used to be an avid long distance runner. It is the exercise of choice for me. In high school, I ran long distance in track and cross country. Ran about 30-40 miles per week. Loved it. In college, I never stopped running, but had periods of busyness, etc. What I did stop doing consistently was weight training. Bad news. I injured my knee and when I visited my doctor she told me that I shouldn't be running anyway--it's a terrible sport for one's body. Hmph. Tell that to a runner.

It was disheartening. It took awhile for my knee to heal and when it did, it really didn't. Got a full time job, got married, had a child. Now, I'm 30 pounds heavier and after visiting a sports medicine doctor, physical therapy, orthotics...I know i have runners knee AND flat feet.

I purchased a pair of saucony progrid for $40 at DSW last Friday and am on the move again. I ran Sunday and yesterday for a total of 2.5 miles. I am slow like a turtle and feel the entire weight of my body as I run. My goal has always been to complete a marathon. I have a long way to go, but hopefully, without injury, I'll do it.

Sooooo....the plan is to run about 3-4 this week and up it a mile per week. I also want to integrate strength training and/or yoga on the days I do not run. My knees feel good (orthotics and new shoes). I'm going to add a ticker to signify that goal. Keep me honest Smile

I can relate with your passion for running. I joined the local Road Runners Club in our community to motivate me in losing weight and a great way to meet new people. I just finished the beginners women running 12 week program (free!!!) to prepare for a 5K. I finished the program running at a decent 10 minute pace and a 5% body fat loss! I just started the 8K program (small fee includes race registration fee) a little intimidated but ready for a new challenge. I also strength train 2 times a week at local gym which helps! Take it slow and enjoy your run! Good Luck!

I never thought I'd ever want to run - for fun nor exercise - but back in January one day I decided that I'd at least try it. Amazingly enough, I found that I actually enjoyed it!

I started a modified version of the C25K program, and by April was able to run 12 minutes straight. Then I got sick . . . So, last week I did my first run on the treadmill, and yesterday did a second run. I plan on running again on Sunday, then will be back on track for my first 5k on July 19.

What about bicycling or swimming? Both are not half as damaging to the body and can be just as good cardio.

BA, I am not averse to other forms of exercise, but none are as gratifying as a good run. It's difficult to explain, but it's kind of an addiction. You get this euphoria when you hit a certain point that you can't get from anything else. I will, however, mix in some cross training here and there to keep things varied Smile

I've been sedentary most of my life, so it was only since 2006 or so that I can understand that exercise feels good, enhances your mood, and that one isn't nuts to do it. Definitely think about strength training for your knees and possibly getting some advice from a trainer. And calisthentics (using your body weight) can really help and is dirt cheap. Smile

Ugh. I completely understand. In high school, I was a three sport athlete, volleyball, basketball and ran the 1/2 mile and the mile in track. In college, I played basketball and ran the 1/2 mile (on a relay) in track. In grad school, I went to the gym about every other day because I couldn't stare at math problems for 12 hours a day...I needed a break! Moved and got a job sitting on my ass all day. Rode my bike at least 20 miles every other day. Played volleyball three times a week. Moved again. Didn't work out as much. Went skiing and blew out my ACL. After 6 months of rehab, it isn't the same. I have gained over 20 pounds since the knee surgery. I'm like 80 pounds over my college playing weight.

I don't even know where to begin. It used to be so easy to stay in shape, so I don't know how to get back in shape. I hate clothes shopping because nothing fits except the old lady clothes. I hate going to my closet because nothing fits.

Cptacek, it really is upsetting, isn't it. We should begin a fitness challenge on this board. I do truly believe that with hard work and patience, we can all be "healthier" people.

The tipping point for me recently was shopping for something to wear to a job fair and realizing that nothing fit and I looked like a hippo.
